Meet the Owners!
I am Rochelle Helm and was raised in Ojai, California. After high school and college, I married and had two daughters. I later returned to school where I obtained a BS in Psychology. Eventually I went on to get an MSIR, and went to work for Eli Lilly in Sales and Marketing. I loved this job because I was able to work and study on very cutting edge science as the world was just beginning to discover brain mapping and in depth neuroscience.
Several years later, I unexpectedly became the sole caretaker of my first granddaughter, Milan. She had interest in sports, acting, Girl Scouts, and was very active in our Church.
When Lani reached high school, she was required to do community service on an ongoing basis. She started working at a recreational park for Individuals with Special Needs and immediately fell in love! She loved interacting with kids and helping them learn and do things they didn’t know they could achieve. Soon the park began giving her assignments of increasing responsibility and eventually she worked there during summers and school breaks, designing their camp curriculum, managing activities and co directing multiple programs. She had found her life’s work.
With a significant learning disability, Lani struggled in school with advanced maths and sciences, regardless of countless tutors, etc. She worked very hard, but the answers on tests were very slow to come. She continued to push herself and with the right continued support, (that she now hopes to bring other struggling learners) she graduated University of Hawaii with a BA in Psychology and Child Development, with an emphasis on Autism. Not only did she get the degree she LOVED, but she graduated with honors!
She became an ABA therapist and has had remarkable results with “Her Kids”. I could talk all day about the miracle results she has gotten with children. Some people call her “The Child Whisper”. “Ms. Lani” most recently worked in AISD middle school Special Education, but providing recreation and generalized high expectations outside of school is where her heart lies. When she discovered WE ROCK THE SPECTRUM KIDS GYM, she knew this was what she had been searching for all her life and that we had to bring it to Austin.
With the tremendous financial backing and efforts of my husband, John Kempf, “We Rock ATX” slowly started coming to life! John coordinated all construction, negotiated our lease, and tirelessly oversaw that all was done correctly to bring the Austin community the best and finest.
With that, we now give you: We Rock the Spectrum – Austin!
We Rock the Spectrum Austin is committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and fun environment to foster learning, exploration and safe sensory experiences. Through our nonprofit My Brother Rocks The Spectrum Foundation, we provide social skills groups and activities for children across the spectrum.
We provide children with a fun and motivational environment to help them in the areas of strength, movement, sensory processing, communication, positive behavior modification, social interactions, and self-care skills. Our unique equipment assists all children in their neurological growth and development.
Our activities, programs and retail location “The Rock Shop” make it possible for us to provide social and physical opportunities through state funded programs. As a result WRTS is an amazing example of how we can help all children grow and develop by providing an ALL inclusive environment.
